Hey Guys

I built a computer about 2 years ago. Here are the spec
Windows XP Professiona
AMD Athlon 64 3000
MSI K8T-NEO
Nvidia Geforce 6800 (AGP 8X
512 MB of Ram of Corsair Valu
512 MB of Ram of Kingston
Let me know if anything else is neede
Anyway my problem is this: after about a year of working great, all o
the sudden there was no picture on the monitor when I turned it on
Fans work and there seems to be power. I contacted a friend that i
good with computers and we diagnosed the problem as being th
Motherboard. We sent the motherboard back to MSI and they sent
replacement. It worked great for about another year (this pas
christmas) and then the same problem occured. This time however w
got a replacement motherboard and replaced the power supply. While w
waited for the motherboard to come and before we replaced the powe
supply, my friend had the exact same motherboard on an old compute
that he let me borrow until the new one from MSI came. Thi
motherboard that he lent me lasted 3 days unitl it supposedly frie
and even though there was power to the fans, again no picture. Th
drives can not be opened either until disconnnected from th
motherboard. Now after we replaced the motherboard and power supply
it worked great for about 3 months unitl this morning when i went t
turn on my computer, nothing came on the monitor even though the fan
were running. Please let me know waht you think is wrong. My frien
thinks I need to BUY a new motherboard and a different brand but
believe the processor might be to blame. I don't have a lot of mone
to spend on this but I will replace the processor and motherboard i
neccessary but I would like to save money where i can. Thanks a lo
and let me know if you need any more details. THANKS

Sounds like garbage power supplies from here. Are you using good
name-brand stuff, or el-cheapo junk that got thrown in with a cheap
case as a bonus?

Do you have on-board graphics and if so, what type of monitor is attached
to it?

4 of the same make and model board? Is that a socket 754? I'd try a very
cheap motherboard made by a different company. But the cheapest I could find
on pricewatch was $50. Try ebay

the power supply was the cheap one that came with the case but the
last time I replaced the motherboard I replaced the power supply with
one from COMP USA i believe. So I don't think the power supply is the
problem...

Why not? How have you arrived at that conclusion? I'm not trying to sound
like a smart-@ss, but your CompUSA power supply *is* the likely culprit. I
know you said that your budget is a concern, but you can still get a quality
power supply (an Antec, for example) at a good price. It doesn't matter how
great of a system you put together otherwise... if you continue to use cheap
power supplies with it, you may as well try to polish a turd.
