Please help with setting wireless network on Windows XP

I purchased DLink-624 router along with DLink adapter for my laptop. I
have Windows XP.
Every time I introduce any changes on my router's setup, including
changing SSID channel, or encryption, or anything else, my laptop
looses connection.
Also "View available wireless connections" option in "Wireless Network
Connection" window does not show any connections available even when
router does not have any encryption. I read all available articles and
posts, but seem not be able to find the answer to my problem. Please
help.

Changing the router's SSID, channel, or encryption SHOULD cause the
laptop to lose its connection -- until you re-configure the laptop
with the new setting(s).

If you've installed the D-Link wireless network utility, use it
(instead of XP's built-in wireless network utility) to view and
connect to the wireless network.

If you haven't installed the D-Link wireless network utility, make
sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration service is running:

1. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
2. Double click Services and Applications.
3. Double click Services.
4. Double click Wireless Zero Configuration. If the Service status is
Stopped, click Start.
5. Set the Startup type to Automatic.

I had an issue with a B*lk*n USB wireless adapter. After you installed
the software, I was able to discover the access point, surf the web
etc. I then enabled encryption on the WAP, and the host was not able
to find the WAP anymore (usually you can find the WAP but the host
would say "encrypted" or some such). I then turned off encryption at
the host, and still could not find the WAP. I had to uninstall and
reinstall the usb adapter, and was able to establish communications
again. I set up WEP on the access point and could not find it on the
host. I uninstalled, reinstalled the host s/w, enabled encryption and
set the key, and the host found the wap.

I had another computer on the same net that never lost track of the
WAP through all these changes (of course I had to enable/disable WEP
as appropriate).

It took a while to try the uninstall/reinstall. Very strange
behaviour.
