Please help! Problem partitioning with XP Home Edition

P

Paul

Hi,

I am new to computers and XP Home Edition & I was
wondering if there was anyone out there who could shed
some light on the following problem.

I am having a problem partitioning my hard disk with XP
Home Edition.

I logged in as administrator and used the Computer
Manger. I selected the Disk Manager and right-selected
the free portion of the disk. By rights I should have
been given the option 'New Partition' but no such option
was available to me (it wasn't even available and dulled
out).

So I tried DiskPart from the command line but no joy with
this. One thing I noticed with Disk Part is that when I
did a 'disk list' it showed my disk to have a disk
capacity of 19GB with no free space! Not sure whether
there is any significance in that.(Computer Manager
showed it to be 19GB and 13GB free which is what it is.)

Can anyone help me on this? Why can't I partition my hard
disk when there is loads of free space?

Thanks in advance,
Paul.

The only thing I can think of to solve this problem is
Stop using the Utility in windows. Right down to
business. First boot your machine up. As soon as your
system boots up hit del button or what ever the button you
use to get into the bios and check that the computer is
set to boot from CD-Rom. Once thats done save changes and
boot your machine up again but this time insert the
Windows XP disk. When the option comes up saying Boot
from CD, Hit the enter key and the computer will boot up
from CD. Wait untill a menu comes up saying Setup
windows. Keep doing it untill you coem up with the
Partition table. Select new partition. The computer
should then say how big do you want your second parition.
It should also tell you how much space you have left. If
it says that you have no space left then if you want to
use the whole Harddrive you might have to repartition it
and reinstall windows. However if it creates the second
parition and it is displayed, hit the f3 key and exit.
Boot into windows and go into disk manager and the
parition should be listed or go into my Computer and you
will see it there also. Right click on it and select the
Fromat option. Press start at the bottom of the window
and the Partition should start formatting. Hope this
makes sense.

Do you have XP install on the 19g drive now? If so you can not partition
that drive with XP you need Partition Magic. That drive is already partition
to drive 'C'.
