Hello,

I have been running two computers (desktop/laptop) with windows mail client
synced with both of them. Today though I needed to reinstall vista on my
laptop. After installing everything I went to set up my email account (with
the same file I had been using previously) and now I am being asked to enter
username and password?

I'm aware of people having this same message so here is what I have tried so
far: I have removed mcfee from both computers, deleted the email account and
re-installed the mail account (without mcfee) this did not work though. I
have entered hundreds of different of username/password combinations to
enable me to use my mail client, no joy!

If someone has any ideas please do let me know.

Here is my error message.....

Account: '(e-mail address removed)', Server:
'pop.oneandone.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR authentication
failed', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number:
0x800CCC92

Cheers!

I'm assuming you have tested that username/password at your mail
provider's webmail portal, to verify that it is valid?
Failure of a valid username/password to be recognized is due to
account corruption.
What do you mean by "synced"? POP mail accounts have no sync
capability. If you are trying to share the same message store for both
computers, that is the cause of your account corruption.

Also, any uninstall of McAfee must be followed up by using their
debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to the newer Windows Live Mail:

Hi, yes webmail works fine.

My two computers were not synced, my bad. I download all the mail to one and
can then check the mail through the other machine.

I'll give your two suggestions a try ...cheers!.

Completely un-installed McAfee and tried my account settings with the new
live mail. I managed to retrieve e-mails but I'm still being asked to enter a
username and password.

Any other ideas to get around this problem?

Much appreciated : )
