You have the wrong server name it should be pop.freeserve.com not
pop3.freeserve.com.
Tools menu>accounts>select your account>properties>server tab.

Do that username and password work when logging in to your webmail
portal? If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Forget that, both of those server names work for me.

Can you login to your webmail account page with the PW & UN?
http://fsmail03.orange.co.uk/webmail/en_GB/login.html

Are you using OE in XP or WM in Vista?

Did you try to login at the site I gave you?

Andy, tell me about the account, is an account that you had previously on
dial-up and have since changed to Broadband?

I am guessing that you have a suspended account, if you do not dial in
within 90 days they suspend your account, after 260 days it dies and can't
be retrieved.

Go to the Orange homepage>help and support>search with the text below,
(copy/paste it to the orange search line.)

retrieving your suspended dial-up account

From the Orange Help site:
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/s...ndererurl.jsp?DocId=234443&Module=selfservice

"If you don't connect to a Dial-up Pay As You Go account at least once
every 219 days, the account will suspend or become inactive.

When this happens, you'll receive the 'invalid username and password' alert
if you try to dial up using the account or, if you use the email address
from another connection, youÂ’ll receive email notification.

In order to keep your Dial-up Pay As You Go account active, youÂ’ll need to
dial up and connect at least once every 219 days, otherwise it will go
through the following stages before being completely deleted from our system
and it canÂ’t be restored"

After 219 days of inactivity an accountÂ’is suspended, meaning that on day
220:

you'll be unable to dial up and connect using your Dial-up Pay As You Go
account
you'll still be able to send and receive emails
weÂ’ll send you an email to notify you that your accountÂ’s suspended
After 225 days of inactivity an accountÂ’s still suspended, meaning that on
day 226:

If you left orange in July 2009 you are at the 219 day stage.

Norton security products are among the top three troublemakers for
Windows Mail. First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the
reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Also, since Norton corrupted that account, there may be no improvement
until you delete the account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

Disabling the Norton's email scanning is sometimes insufficient. If so,
do a trial uninstall, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

If that cured the problem, try reinstalling Norton Antivirus, but use 'custom'
install so you can unselect installing its email scanning engine.

Another option (instead of reinstalling Norton) is to install a more compatible
antivirus, such as the free Microsoft Security Essentials:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Still another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of overly intrusive antivirus products:
