Please give some tips to fix this problem, I don't want to reinstall windows
vista, and them get problem with the activation.

you mean absolutely nothing happens or there is an error of some kind.

when you right click on desk top, menu should come up. click on NEW and then SHORTCUT.
a window should come up that asks what task to create it for with browse.

First, reinstalling Windows should be a very last resort for the resolution
of any issue and second, there should be no reason to fear activation unless
you have a cracked version of Windows.

I'm assuming from your post, you have gone through a normal procedure to
create a desktop shortcut, right click a blank space, select new shortcut
and nothing happens at some point in the process.

Have you ever been able to create a desktop shortcut? If this problem is
relatively recent, you can try using System Restore to take you back to a
time prior to when this began. Go to the Start Menu and click through as
follows:
All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore. System Restore only
restores the registry and system settings. While you should always be well
backed up, your data should be untouched.

Michael, Thanks. my big problem is that I turned off system restore, system
was working ok, the problem started when for error I did change the
association for .lnk - shortcut - from unknown application to iexplorer,
after all my desktop icons changed to generic icons, I search google and find
a fix, now the current default is back to unknown application, also my
desktop icons came back too. The only problem now is creating a desktop
shortcut, I tried differents .exe file and nothing happens. When I right
click and choose new - folder- the new folder is created. I hope to get some
help.

mykeyhsd, absolutely nothing happens, menu come up, I click on New and then
shortcut, nothing happens. No window come up asking for the task to create it.

Not true... noticed sys restore in vista does affect some recent files
added... Not sure why, XP never did it... But what the hell, as long as OS
returns to a usable state.

since you have now said the problem started after changing the LNK association.
not sure what to suggest, other than a maybe an repair install known as in place upgrade on vista.

Actually, it could and did happen in XP to some users who often didn't use
the My Documents folder to store their data files. Not everyone had the
issue but it did occur.

You'll note, I will make an adjustment in my response about System Restore
in the future as not only is it possible SR MAY affect some files and, as
with any such procedure, there might also be a destructive failure of some
kind. That said, you'll note, I did advise the user to always be well
backed up.

Well, if he's legit, perhaps it's too much FUD by others!:-)

Alias, I try not to editorialize, boost or otherwise be a cheerleader one
way or the other. If you search Google on my name, you'll find that to be
true with regard to my posts, going back many years and that includes the
time I was in the MVP program.

I've reinstalled XP and Vista many times on different PCs without an issue
with regard to activation, even on systems where there has been some
hardware changes. That may not be the case for others, I'm aware of that
and realize my experience MAY not be typical. However, assuming a legit
copy of Vista, at worst, he may have to use the activate by phone option.

Don't read that as defense of activation. Whether or not he should have to
activate is a separate issue. My response to the OP was meant to deal with
the issue at hand and not abstract or rhetorical issues.

Mikeyhsd, Thanks, just to clarify my windows vista premiun came with my new
HP computer, many post do not have any reference to the issue of my question,
reinstall windows vista is too mucho time, I need to reinstall all my
programs.
I think that I can live without create a desktop shortcut, or contact
directly windows support, to fix this BIG problem, as any one in windows
vista general discussion, has idea like me why this happen. Thanks to all !!

It's a shame that one must continually explain oneself in this NG. You've
done an admirable job of it. Wish you didn't have to...
