I had a problem on boot up when using Windows XP, my wifes cousin come round
and cleaned off my hard drive and it has been working fine although i noticed
that even before i was logged on to the Internet i received a pop-up telling
me that my Registry was damaged and that i had to go to a web site and
download Registry Cleaner.
I have experienced this problem before but can't remember how to go about
stopping it as a work collegue fixed my computer for me when i got a virus.
Can anyone tell me how to stop this pop-up withoput downloading this
Registry Cleaner which would cost me.

download the free program and run it. If that fails, and it may.
try spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
this should get it all.
if not then try trends housecall. this could take some time since you need to download from them, and run something

Course you have to download all the programs above, cept housecall is a one shot deal. You can go back to trend as often as you want.
If all else fails, try stepping thru all of slyck's recommendations.

I suspect from what you described that adaware will kill it. or spybot.
Inoculation can be as big a problem as spyware since you now have something scanning your incoming 24/7. same as a virus or trojans.
so ignore spybots recommendation to inoculate yourself.
It sets a realtime scanner in your startup. Next to impossible to remove cept using spybot itself.

Your wife's cousin did not do a complete job of cleaning up your
computer and it still has malware. You can go through the steps at the
link below, or take your machine to a professional computer repair shpo
(not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

That is not an operating system message. It is adware that must somehow be
removed.
