Please help me fix this...

n I am working with an hp pavilion amd turio 64 x2. I just bought the
computer a couple of weeks ago. I had trend micro anti-virus and webroot
spysweeper installed at the store. Now my computer keeps giving me the
multiple security problems alert. It says malware protection, and windows
defender is turned off. When I click to turn defender on, it gives me the
same message as pretty much everybody else here. Searching for
definitions-and then windows can't find definitions at this time, etc. I
can't turn defender back on, and I'm paranoid, beacause it keeps giving me
the alert-its red. I click on the find a program beside the virus alert and
it takes me to a software page with symantec, trend micro, etc that I'm
supposed to buy. It says the firewall is intact and the spysweeper, but I
can't do a thing about the virus ware, and defender. I went and downloaded a
free trial of the 2007 trend micro and it still says its not found installed
on the computer, but at least the icon is at the bottom of the screen now.
Does anyone else have this problem, please help, if you find out the answer
my email is (e-mail address removed). Thanks.

See if reinstalling Trend Micro helps. TM does turn Defender of for its
own Anti Spyware module, which should be properly recognized by the
Security Center.

Why would you want three anti-malware applications running at the same time?
SpySweeper, Windows Defender and TrendMicro all running simultaneously is a
recipe for disaster, especially if you are running the latest edition of
SpySweeper that has anti-virus incorporated into it.

I used Spysweeper for many years and was very satisfied, but found it to be
incompatible with Vista, regardless of what Webroot tells you. I would
uninstall SpySweeper and keep it off the computer.

I evaluated TrendMicro's internet security suite for Vista and found it to
be incompatible with Vista. The software could not even connect with its own
servers (this was not a Vista issue, but a TrendMicro issue). I contacted
their support department; they sent me a response appx. thirty days later.
Their software was not recognized by Windows Security Center although it was
running at the time (this appears to be a Vista issue since the problem went
away after I did a clean reinstall of the Vista OS). I would uninstall the
TrendMicro software and not use it again.

Based upon years of experience with the different security products I offer
this advice, again based solely on my personal use of the products. Do not
purchase or use any security software from Norton/Symantec, TrendMicro or
ZoneAlarm as they are all incompatible with Vista. Do not purchase or use
McAfee as it is a resource hog (I won't even waste my time evaluating it as I
washed my hands of McAfee long, long ago). The technical support departments
of all four of these vendors are the worst I have encountered. They appear to
be reading from training manuals as they speak to you or write to you. If
they cannot answer your question they either disconnect you or ignore you.

I have found Windows Live One Care, Nod 32 and Avast to be compatible with
Vista and they all perform well. I'm sure there are others but I have not
evaluated them.

My suggestion to you is to go back to where you purchased your computer and
request a refund of the money you paid for TrendMicro and Webroot software as
they are incompatible with Vista. I assume you are running Vista since you
are in a Vista forum. However, you did not state in your posting what kind of
operating system you are using.

You should not run two or more anti-virus or malware applications at the
same time. Due to the manner in which security applications function one of
the applications may mistake the actions of another for malware and disable
the function. Where does that leave you then? You are asking for trouble. You
should also refrain from running two firewalls at the same time unless one is
a hardware firewall, such as your modem or router, and one is a software
firewall. You are again asking for conflicts. Some people will tell you that
they run multiple anti-malware applications at the same time with no
problems. That is all well and good, for now. Of course, at any given time in
the future it could turn around and bite them in the ass. Some people will
tell you they run multiple firewalls with no problems. How do they know there
are no problems? There may very well be a conflict between the two firewalls
that prevents one or both of them from stopping something or even reporting
it. The only way to find out is to read the logs, if you have them enabled.

You don't have to take my advice. The decision is yours to make. Of course,
as soon as I post these comments I suspect I will be bombarded with replies
from others telling me how stupid I am, or that I am an idiot or a moron, but
that's OK. In this country everyone has the right to freely speak their
opinions and they are entitled to do so.

What I don't understand is this: Why do people blindly follow the advice of
others when purchasing a computer or the various software and hardware items
that come with it? Why not research the issues first and then TELL them what
YOU desire? I have made ignorant decisions about these matters myself and I
have learned from them. I am only trying to prevent others from making the
same mistakes I have made in the past. I read these forums so that I don't
continue to make stupid mistakes and decisions and I have gleaned a vast
amount of information from them.

Have a nice day.

TM is perfectly compatible with Vista, I'm running it with no problems
at all. In fact they are certified for Vista by Microsoft.

I have found Windows Live One Care, Nod 32 and Avast to be compatible

AVG Free also preforms well under Vista.
In any test of antivirus software I've read, OneCare allways comes of
worse for wear, it lets too many virusses slip through and doesn't get
updated often enough.
