Please Help: iexplore.exe application error

For about a week now I have had this same problem that even with my own
technical support experience, I cannot fix. I am runing Win XP home edition
SP2, with internet explorer 6.0. My problem is:
When I have multiple IE windows open, or even just one, and attempt to close
just one of the windows, it causes a castcade of " Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close" for every window I have open, and
they all close, which drives me crazy because whatever I am looking at,
normally not the window I am attempting to close, completely disappears and I
have to start all over again. If I go to event viewer and look at the
application error, it says "faulting application iexplore.exe, version
6.0.2900.2180, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address
0x0017f590...Event ID 1000. I have also recieved error messages like "The
instructions at 0x03c0f741 referenced memory at 0x4f2f4708. The memory could
not be "written". And also a similar message but ending with "the memory
could not be "read". The only commonality that I have found between my
problem and similar problems posted on here is that I recently downloaded all
the windows updates, that were offered up tp date for my laptop. After
calling Toshiba for technical support, I went back to a restore point
previous to when the problem started and the problem still exists. The only
thing tech help provided was it could be a spyware bug that the antispyware
program I have is not detecting (Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Microsoft
Defender). Please Help!
