Upgraded friends PC, kept hard drive(with win2000 on) cd roms, just added
new motherboard (DFi Lanparty NF4) new CPU, graphics card

When i powered on for the first time all was well went into BIOS CPU fan
wasnt working fully, only 800rpm so i went straight into the bios and
altered "turn cpu fan off if under certain temp" and when re booted cpu fan
was on, re booted and now all it does is power up but doesnt turn monitor
on and the power light on the front of the PC just flashes on and off.

any help appreciated
cheers

What kind of power supply does the computer have? It sounds like you
may have a faulty or inadequate power supply.

300watt standard ATX power supply, would i be better with a higher wattage?

just tried a 500watt PS and still the same, !!

Sounds like you forgot the 4-pin power connector on the mobo.
Lot of mobos will post to BIOS, but when Windows tries to start,
the power will fail. If you get a "post" beep, that is almost sure
to be the problem. Next thing, is reseat the graphics card. Pull
it all the way out, and then seat it and note if it tilts. If it does,
you
have the mobo mounted crooked, or on wrong standoffs. Next
is possibility you don't have ram seated. That can be tricky too.
Some mobos don't have good slots, and you have to flex it
on one end ( away from video card ) to seat the ram. Next,
check which fan connector on the mobo you used. You may
have the cpu fan on the system connector, and the psupply
fan monitor on the cpu fan connector.

think i may have sussed it!! ust read the following on a website:

"The extra 4 pins are to power a PCI-E graphics card. If you are not using a
PCI-E card then it's ok to use the 20 pin connector. If you are using a
PCI-E card it's still ok as long as the card has an external power
connection and connects directly to the power supply."

i AM using an pci express graphics card!

Guess ill have to gte a new Power Suply with the 24 pin connector

New Antec SmartPower 350 watt has that connector ..
also has the 6-pin weirdy that is getting popular. I just
saw that this week first time.

Sounds like the CPU may have fried when the machine was first started with
the CPU fan off due to the incomprehensible BIOS setting. You would NEVER
want the CPU fan off!

ok i still have problems!!
the store has exchaned the CPU and the board for identical items and i still
have the same damn problem, even after buying a new PSU with the 24 pin
connectors!

Sometimes i turn the tower on and it just makes 2 long beeps, other times it
doesnt but it still doesnt fire up the graphics card,(which is ok as ive
tested it in another PC!)

Make sure you don't have a bad memory module. If you are using two, try them
one at a time. Also make sure that everything is seated in the slots
correctly. Also, make sure the CPU fan is connected to the "CPU Fan" header
on the MB and not one of the auxiliary ones. Good luck..........

Have you re-formatted/installed OS anew since upgrade; or are you trying
to use the hd with the OS installed with the old components? s
