Please help ... All icons and taskbar vanish

I thought I had sussed it! My computer booted ok and my home screen set up
ok, and before I knew it the icons disappeared along with the taskbar,
leaving me with just my homescreen background. Frozen.

I tried to cheat the shut down by clicking on an antivirus icon quickly,
this actually worked in some cases, lengthening out the time the icons
remained. I eventually (after many hours of restarting, overcame the problem
.... the problem disappeared!). I was really chuffed ... until the problem
happened again and messages such as 'Prefetch corrupt' and 'virtual memory
low' came up before the icons and taskbar disappeared again.

I found out how to get into Safe Mode, which works great. I didn't realise
you could even access the internet in Safe Mode. Well, I deleted unnecessary
files, ran antivirus scans etc etc. All clear ... no virus. I changed
virtual Memory to System configuration, also deleted Prefetch (as I read XP
restores it).

I started up again ... no difference. It all disappears within a minute.

Anyone able to help me? I am losing my mind!
