Please fix this

Ya'll really need to fix this sig. updateing problems. Mine has shown that
it is updating in the event log but the version in the program doesn't
change, then after 14 days it tells me my sig. file is out of date. I even
went to windows update yesterday to get the latest updates and the sig. was
one of them and showed to install successfully. Today I find that the
signatures haven't changed in the program. This has happened before and i
uninstall the current file and then update it manually and it changes. If the
file version in the main window doesn't change is it still useing that
version when it does a scan or is it useing the supposedly installed new
version. I suspect since it tells me that the version is out of date in 14
days that its useing the old version but i really don't know.
Anyway this really needs to be fixed. The old anti-spyware program didn't
have this problem best i remember, but i don't think it used the windows
update program either and maybe that is the problem.

Can you download and install all offered updates on www.windowsupdate.com?
Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you have these files.

You can use my KB as a troubleshooting step, but I would use it after users
have installed updates from WU.

1) install updates from WU
2) 915105 :)

Thanks for all the work you are doing here Engel :)

I've been having the same problem. This morning I installed all the updates
at the Microsoft update site, including the new signature file. Afterwards,
the update icon was still indicating updates needed to be installed. So I
used Windows Install Cleanup to remove the signature file, and then manually
installed the sig file from Windows Defender Help menu. I've been doing this
manual install for about 2 months now ever since I started having the
problem, and it's getting old. As the first person wrote, "Y'all really need
to fix this." It's annoying and I'm on the verge of migrating to Webroot.

I have found a procedure which seems to make the updating of WD signatures
reasonably painless.
When I recieive notification that a new signature file is available for
download, I follow these steps:
1. Do http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105
2. Download the new signature file and wait until it has been installed
3. Open WD, go to Help/About Windows Defender and click on Check for Updates
4.After a minute or so, a message says that there is no new update available
and then the new signature file number appears at the bottom of the WD home
page.
Still, wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft could fix this problem that most
people seem to be having with WD.

Those are relatively painless steps--thanks--but:

How will you know when the problem has been solved?

You won't see the autoupdate instantaneously when it is announced. I'd
recommend giving it some time and seeing if your system is updating on its
own at some point.

I was having the same problem with the first beta version, but I upgraded to
version
1.1.1347.0 last week and today signature 1.14.1402.2 installed without a
glitch. Perhaps version 1347 has solved the problem.
