Playstation3 graphics will far surpass GeForce 6800u SLI

according to PSM / Playstation Magazine,

the current, non-final Playstation3 development kits are using twin GeForce
6800 Ultras, in SLI. but even this does not scratch the surface of what the
final Playstation3 will be able to do graphically, with its completed, final
GPU, which is still being worked on by Nvidia (and Sony).

"One of the next-generation Playstation project from the begining has been
computing giant IBM. They helped co-design the system's integral Cell CPU
with SCEI, but as PSM has learned from development sources, their involvment
is extending way past the deal.

In fact the lastest version of the Playstation 3 development kit, as of this
writing, is built around a custom Cell-based PC created by engineers at IBM.
The system has a single Cell processor rather than multiple G5 chips some
have specualated it would, and runs a custom Linux-based operating system
designed by Sony Computer Entertainment and mention at last E3.

At present, the kit has two top-of-the-line NVIDIA graphics cards running in
tandem (SLI) and even then, one source tells us it's "not even scratching
the surface of what PS3 will be able to do visually.

Free grains of salt for everyone!

Typical BS marketing hype. If its GPU is so much more advanced than 2
SLI'ed 6800U's then why havent Nvidia let it out for the PC. It must be
a HUGE leap in GPU technology in that case and why would Nvidia keep it
locked up specially for the PS3. They wouldn't since they're there to
make as much money as possible.

So this is marketing BS hype.

Maybe they'll make the GPU available in the Cell-based PCs that are due
out later this year. Since this is a GPU specially designed to work
with the Cell, it might not operate at optimal levels on a Pentium box.

I really can't wait for some reactions at E3.

Because, perhaps in this zany world of computer hardware, Sony has
nVidia under contract NOT to release the hardware under any other label?

I'd love for this to be true.. but... it's not entirely likely.

I still remember the polygon claims that Sony made for the PS2. LOL!

LOL, of course according to PSM. And come November when Xbox Next hits the
market. PS3 will only be a bad thought in a lot of peoples minds.

Good as it sounds its not very likely, they made similer claims about
the ps2 graphics.
What they should really be saying is : the graphics will be better than
what MOST peoples pc's have.
Thanks to ease of upgrades computers will always win in the end.

not really.

back in 1999, the high-end Voodoo3 was faster than SLI'd Voodoo2's of 1998.

the GeForce 6800U of 2004 was more than twice as fast as the previous
generation GeForce FX 5800U and 5900U of 2003.

the PS3 GPU, as I said, is based on Nvidia's NEXT-GEN architecture--that'll
be used in PCs as well as PS3. neither will be out until 2006--which means
both will be roughly 2 years newer than 6800U (which is 2004 tech).

no reason why Nv5X (or whatever is next-gen) for PCs and PS3 cannot be
somewhat MORE than TWICE as powerful as a single 6800, in other words,
somewhat more powerful than *SLI* 6800's. this is nothing unusual and
actually happens quite often in technology.

with that said, I do not expect Nvidia's next-gen GPUs for PCs and PS3 to be
orders of magnitude more powerful than SLI'd 6800's, but should
significantly outperform such a setup.

Newsweek February 2000:

"The new Sony PlayStation 2, which goes on sale March 4 in Japan, is not
only a quantum leap in game technology, but because of its Internet
compatibility, it's Sony's bid to compete with AOL-Time Warner and
Microsoft on the Web. In an exclusive look at the new machine, Newsweek
reports in the current issue's cover story that the game console can
play movie DVDs, audio CDs and can hook into the Internet. ``You can
communicate to a new cybercity,'' Ken Kutaragi, the visionary behind the
PlayStation, tells Newsweek. ``This will be the ideal home server. Did
you see the movie 'The Matrix'? Same interface. Same concept. Starting
from next year, you can jack into 'The Matrix'!''"

Wasn't George Lucas alledgedly quoted that he thought the Emotion Engine
could render Episode 1's Pod Race sequence in Real time?

You correctly identify one piece of propaganda, and then spout one of your
own.

*sigh*

Say it with me, people, "It's not the hardware, it's the games."

I could care less what's under the hood of my console. All I care is that
it plays the games I want. If it doesn't do that, then it doesn't matter
how powerful it is.

Okay, I'll buy that. Technically it most certainly is possible to
develop something faster then SLI 6800's. But wouldn't that make a 1000$
console?! How much does an SLI setup go for at the moment...

Wow, the PS3's specs are about as impressive as the PS2's were when
originally announced.

How much do you wanna bet we'll be seeing the *same* sorts of games
we're seeing today?: 1st and 3rd person perspective shooters, 3D
fighters, sports games, racing titles, blah blah blah, with somewhat
improved graphics.

Yup, its about the games folks, and I don't think this generation is
gonna bring much new. *Although* they do stand to offer more
entertainment features and options for the average dedicated console
gamer.

Personally, I give it another 15-20 years before I get excited about
console gaming again. Maybe by then they'll have figured out how to
properly implement human-like artificial intelligence and totally
immersive virtual rooms to make the games more interesting. Oh yeah,
I would luv a quantum computer right about now.

Not saying these new systems won't bring good games, but rather these
games are the same games basically, that we've been playing for the
past 10 years; so don't go too ga-ga over the marketing machines' hype
from either camp.

Dude, why do you even bother taking air into your lungs? It's the same
thing day after day yah know.

So you don't watch any movies or television broadcast?
Besides special FX in movies, what hasn't been done before?
Nearly everything has been done before in almost any facet of life, why
would this take away from someone's enjoyment of a hobby such as video
games? Why are you even frequenting these forums and giving your opinion if
you are so bored with the did it done that attitude?
The only innovations you will see in 10 or 20 years will be the same as we
see year to year now.
I'll take graphics and sound upgrades every chance I can.
With these new consoles going to full HD resolution and superior channel per
channel sound, that is all the upgrade I will need for now.

Dunno, but live people are the best you got now, and the best for that is PC
WoW.

Actually, it seems more and more like a small subset of genres we've played.
Knock off after knock off. I mean, what was actually new this generation?
Kongos? Somehow I doubt that wasn't done before.

And MANY excellent genres have been completely dumped.

It's a small subset of formula gaming, at this point. Just look at the
games for that.

Wow, who would have thought YOU, of all people, would put on your black and
white shades. lol Such nonsense.
So you don't watch any movies or television broadcast?
Besides special FX in movies, what hasn't been done before?

What? So this is your reponse? You point to one of the most formula based
media to make a point? Why don't you just say that we've not seen anything
new in mirrors or underpants lately?

Not all creative mediums are so driven by sales. There are many art forms
that are constantly expanding, but they tend to be more art for art's sake
rather than art for money's sake. Few video game makers are even willing to
gamble on new genres or ideas, just like movies or television.
Nearly everything has been done before in almost any facet of life, why
would this take away from someone's enjoyment of a hobby such as video
games? Why are you even frequenting these forums and giving your opinion

Perhaps because those of us that have pubic hair have seen more genres than
those cranked out enmass now a days.
The only innovations you will see in 10 or 20 years will be the same as we
see year to year now.

I'm kind of interested in what the "revolution" is supposed to have.
Nintendo's usually pushing the norm, even if they aren't necessarily
innovating them.
I'll take graphics and sound upgrades every chance I can.
With these new consoles going to full HD resolution and superior channel

It's marginal, though. We're getting to diminishing returns. I'll be
surprised if it's all that much better.
