Playlist and Ripping

Talk about being a newbie. My 8 year old grandson can do this, but I don't
know how.

1) What does 'rip' mean and how do I rip a tune from an audio CD?
2) How do I make a 'playlist'? I have beat this one to death and Windows
Media Player (to name just one) doesn't like what I do

Don't try to answer the above here. If someone could please tell me where
to go to get some basic instruction I'd appreciate it.
