Playing mov files

I'm running Windows XP, with SP2, which had Windows Media Player ver
9.00.00.3250, and which I just updated to Ver 10.

I have lots of mov files which are tutorials. When I play them Quick Time is
called up to do so. I've tried to have Windows Media Player handle these mov
files, but have been unsuccessful. Am I correct in assuming that I have to
stay with Quick Time for the *.mov files?

If I can run them in Windows Media Player, what are the steps to do so? I've
tried assigning the Media Player to the mov files, but have had no luck.

To my knowledge it can't be done, though I would be very
happy if someone were to prove me wrong.

Hi Bob,

It does seem odd that MS hasn't addressed the "mov" files. With their push
to become the do-it-all media center, it would seem that "mov" files would
be on their list.

I actually have hundreds of them on CDs, DVDs, and hard drives. And Quick
Time is a PITA, always bothering me about upgrading. And, the latest version
I downloaded (as an installation file) is QT and iTunes. And, I have no need
or use for iTunes. Hopefully when I go to install it on my new laptop, I'll
have the option to not install iTunes, but I doubt it.

The QuickTime format (MOV) is proprietary to Apple and for
that reason, AFAIK, MS won't touch it. The same thing
applies to RA (Real Player) files. One difference between
the two is that the latest version of the QuickTime player
is considerably less invasive and obnoxious than previous
ones used to be, which is why I know allow it on my
computer.
