Playing CD music in PowerPoint 2000

Guest

Hi. I have copied a song through Windows Media Player to my hard drive. I
insert it into PowerPoint 2000 by clicking on Insert>Movies and Sounds>Sound
from File and pick the song. I click Yes to play automatically. I then
change the custom animation to play through all slides. It works fine.

PROBLEM: I open the same file on another computer with same version of
PowerPoint and Windows 2000 and it does not work. When I go to custom
animation to see the length of the clip, it says 0:00

Any ideas?

The music file and presentation are on a network drive in a school setting.
In Custom Animation, it says that the file is inserted, but it has 0:00 for
the playing time.

Did you move the sound file to the other computer, too?

Was the sound file in the same folder with PPT when you inserted it into
PPT?

Okay, but you said this:

So does that mean that the sound was on your harddrive before you moved it
and the presentation to the server? Was the sound in the folder with the
presentation on your harddrive when you inserted it, or was it just "loose"
on your harddrive?

If the sound wasn't in the same folder with the presentation on the
harddrive before moving both to the server, it could be a linking issue.

What kind of sound file is it?

My mistake. The PPT and music file were both on the network drive when I did
it.

In that case, I don't know what the problem is. Path difference from the
other system and your system to the network drive, maybe? Is the other
system using the same version of PPT that you are?

What type of sound file is it? I wonder if it would work better to convert
the sound file to a WAV so it can be embedded instead of linked?

I think I will try to change it to a wav file. How do you do that? Also,
how do you embed?

To convert, you'd head to Google and search for Convert ___ (whatever type
of sound file you have -- I've asked twice, but you still haven't answered
that part) WAV. That should turn up a ton of sound editing software.
Audacity has been mentioned here as being good. So has GoldWave. Then just
follow that program's instructions to export/save/render as WAV.

To embed a WAV, which is the only sound file that can be embedded, first go
to Tools/Options and put 50000 in the box where it says "link sound files
greater than XXX kb." This will cause any WAV smaller than 50MB to be
embedded. *After* you do that, then insert your WAV file using
Insert/Sound/From File.
