Playing audio through CD player despite no sound card

Sam

I have a computer I use with data aquisition hardware that
prevents me from installing a sound card.

With Windows 98 I was able to connect headphones to my CD-
rom player and listen to CDs using "CD Player"

Now with Windows XP I cannot get media player to play
anything in the drive because I get an error message that
there is no sound card or audio device. I have enabled
the drive for analog and WMP still won't play.

Is there anyway to get analog output from the headphone
jack on my CD-rom drive while using Windows XP?

Thanks.

You need to turn off "enable digital CD audio for this CD ROM device" in
device manager under DVD/CD drives Properties tab, for the drive(s) you
want. Then you can have analog audio come through the headphone jack on the
drive. If you have a drive with a second button, usually you can use that
button to partially control the drive, making it completely independent of
the computer, other than for it's power. If you also use a cable to connect
the drive to a sound card, you can also get it through your speakers, but
you will have a separate control for it. (CD audio)
