Play mpg video in ppt presentation

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but until now I didn't need to know
(!)

I'm running PowerPoint 2000 & Win XP Home. I have several mpg video clips
which I'd like to insert into a ppt presentation. I've looked with no
success for mpg-to-avi converters, and have also explored using hyperlinks
to call up the windows media player to play the mpg files. So far I haven't
been successful.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Many thanks......Lee

Have you tried using the MPG's in PowerPoint - - Insert > Movies and Sounds
Movie from File? What happened? What message did you get?

Further to Sonia's advice...
MPEG1 is a well established format now and shouldn't cause any major
problems, short of those caused by other programs hijacking multimedia
playback.
MPEG2 is more hardware/software reliant and may not play at all without help
from either hardware (e.g. specific graphics cards) or software. Even if
MPEG2 plays in Windows Media Player it still may need a software codec
installation to work with PowerPoint.
I thoroughly recommend the MPEG2 Player v2 from www.elecard.com

Would it be reasonable to tack on this warning: That a player like this may
make wonderful things happen on your own PC, but may also delude you into
thinking that the same wonderful things will happen for other people you
send the presentation to.

It would certainly be more than reasonable
