plain desktop icons

some of my desktop short cut icons have lost the graphics and are just
plain boxes with the the short cut arrow in it.

The links still work.

any ideas

Right-click on the shortcut, choose properties, change icon button under
General tab.

If the shortcut points to the right icon, change it to a different one,
save and then change it back. It forces the cache to change.

One thing worth trying before you start doing too much damage. Chenge the
screen resolution to some other value and then change it back. This forces
an icon rebuild. TweakUI (part of the Power Toys) also contains an option
for rebuilding the icons.
