place text on top of a box

I have a box that is filled with a blue background and I have saved it as an
image file with a gradient background. how do I put that on my site and also
include some text on the far left side? Such as the Microsoft Online wording
on the left hand side of the discussion group home page. Every time I try to
put something on top of it, one or the other moved.
 
Insert the image as cell background image in a table, then insert your text.

well, that is some of the most clear-cut, understandable instructions I have
