Pivot Table Integrity Problems

Excel 2003 keeps destroying my Pivot Tables when a spreadsheet is loaded up.
I get the following message. "PivotTable ......was discarded due to integrity
problems".

An extract from Microsoft Office Excel File Repair Log 24 Oct 2005 reads
Errors were detected in file 'D:\Time Report Oct 2005.xls'
The following is a list of repairs:
PivotTable report 'PivotTable1' on '[Time Report Oct
2005.xls]HrsSummaryDaily' was discarded due to integrity problems.
I have had 10 Pivot Tables trashed by Excel.

I am running Office 2003 under Windows XP Professional. The original
spreadsheets with Pivot Tables were created with Office 97 version of Excel.
I have subsequently added a few further pivot tables, however all Pivot
Tables are being discarded. I suspect this is an MS compatibility issue
between the two versions? Does Microsoft or anyone have any similar
experiences and solutions? Even suggested options?

Thanks for the info. The comments and solution does not appear to apply to my
problem which is similar. I can open the file on the second attempt but the
Pivot Tables are non-functional. Also I am using Excel 2003 SP2 Part of
Office Professional 2003 and not Excel 2002 or Excel XP to which the article
applies.

I've started experiencing the same problem after the latest Windows
Office 2003 update. I followed the AutoRecover hint in the old
knowledgebase article. Doesn't help with trashed tables, maybe will
prevent future trashing.

Hi Gang,
I have hust encountered teh same problem on the company network.
The excel file was opened with Office XP including Service Pack 3. It seems
the fix in SP3 didn't work after all.

Anone have another way forward?

Hi
I have the exact same problem, it is described in article 819853 only
I'm using Excel 2003 not 2002. The problem only occurs on a few computers,
in most cases everything works fine. Does anyone know if there is a fix
available for the 2003 version?

Hi SMG,

It does look like there is a bigger problem than is in Article ID : 819853.

I hope microsoft can fix this one. It's impacting 400 staff at work.
.... and it's all over a simple pivot table! :-(

Come on Microsoft... please find a workaround/fix.

I have pinned down the problem. It is a combination of using a password on
the spreadsheet and using the AutoRecover feature.

I am using Office 2003 Professional and have been experiencing these
problems for the past month. Microsoft has released three Security Updates
since the begining of October 2005. My problems started after I installed
the Updates from roughly 1/12/06. My guess as the real problem here is
something to do with the way in which a protected file is encrypted. My
particular file has had embedded Pivot Tables and has been protected for
the past two years. This problem started on 1/12/06.

The solution is to unprotect the spreadsheet. You can leave ON the
AutoRecover feature unlike the recommended solution/workaround shown in
the Microsoft help article. I tried to password protect the file and
turned off the AutoRecover and still had the same problem.

Again, the solution is to unprotect the file.

Good luck.

Hi Jpe,

I can't thank you enough for what sounds like a lot of trial & error work.
Unfortunately I can't let my spreadsheet out on the company network without
password protection at least on the raw data. :-(

Have you by any chance found that your workbook is ok with password
protection only on the sheet containing the raw data but leaving protection
off the spreadsheet with the pivot table & the spreadsheet with the
associated graph?

I'll try this on the network when I get in on Monday.
Thanks again for your efforts!... Microsoft should pay you for the work that
they should have done!

I just experienced this problem at a client's premises, and was looking for a
solution. Have MS been informed about this? How long does it usually take to
solve these kind of bugs.

Hi Carl,

As far as I know, this forum is the only way to communicate the problem with
Microsoft. I have seen their techs solve an issue here before.
No sign of any interest on their part as yet though :-(

Hi I have been having similar but not exactly the same problems. Does
anybody know does turning protection on and off on a sheet that doesn't
contain pivots cause problems to the sheets with pivots?

Yes, Microsoft please help, this problem is driving me insane.

I have experienced exactly the same problem on a workbook that holds
sensitive information and requires protection so that it can be distributed.

The sheet has:
Columns on the raw data that are hidden and the sheet protected.
The pivot table and associated graph sheets are hidden and the workbook
protected.

After several failed attempts to find a solution for this bug I have had to
write a Macro that recreates the pivot table & Graph after every update to
the raw data. This is not an ideal solution but it seems that there is no
other choice.

Hi - I did find a solution in the end. Instead of protecting the sheets, I
turned off the data refresh menu options and the Pivot table wizard on
Worksheet Activate and turn them back on when the workbook closes. The
pivots are holding so far. Actually got the solution from the discussion
group.
