Have to clients (2K pro & XP pro) that can ping each other but not the
"server" (actually another XP pro workstation acting as the SAV server).
The
Server can ping both clients... All 3 can ping any other computer on the
network.
could someone please give me some suggestions as to what i need to do get
the 2 clients to ping that server.
thx.
Can any other computers on the network ping the server?
If the server is un-pingable from all machines, then it's likely a firewall
on the server.
If you have XP-SP2, go into the Windows Firewall options, exceptions tab,
and enable the F+P Sharing exception.
If you have a pre-SP2 version of XP, then the firewall is called Internet
Connection Firewall. Disable it on the LAN connection.
If the machine is only un-pingable from those 2 clients, then it could still
be a firewall issue: check the scope of the firewall is permitting the IP
addresses of those machines in. Otherwise, it's likely to be an IP routing
issue. The 2 clients might be 'off subnet' from the server's point of view,
for example. This could be caused by an incorrect subnet mask on the
server. To further diagnose that, we'd need:
Server machine IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway;
Bad machine IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway;
Example good machine IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.
