The various suggestions with CMD PING might well work but
perhaps someone would tell me why
ping
address
should not work for the OP. It certainly works for me in Windows
XP. If you just give ping by itself, a command window opens and
closes momentarily, of course.

i tried your suggestion and it says cmd is not a valid win32 application.

thanks for all your help!

does the ping.exe file exist in your \windows\system32 folder?

when you open a command shell and execute the path command, is
\windows\system32 listed?

See if the following files are present in your system:

ping.com
cmd.com
regedit.com

If the above files are present, *delete* them immediately, as they are
created by viruses. The legitimate Ping utilty is PING.EXE located at
C:\Windows\System32 folder.

*Follow-up with complete malware cleanup.

You're welcome! BTW, don't forget to do a thorough malware checkup.
