Cannot ping my own IP address or browse Internet

Blair Hamren

My daughter's laptop, running XP Home, started not allowing her to access
secure sites. It would come up "page cannot be displayed" for every secure
site. She was running IE6 so I upgraded her to IE7 so I could compare all of
her settings to mine. Now every single web page comes up "Internet Explorer
cannot display the webpage".

Here is what I have found so far:
1. If I disable her wireless connection and hardwire her into the router
with Cat 5 cable it makes no difference.
2. When I do an ipconfig /all her "Node Type" comes up mixed while working
ones come up hybrid
3. She can ping remote internet addresses - e.g. she gets a valid ping for
208.176.137.34 and 24.172.148.91
4. She can ping the router (192.168.10.1) and the other laptop
(192.168.10.3) but she cannot ping herself (192.168.10.2).
5. She can ping both localhost and 127.0.0.1
6. My laptop can ping her laptop.
7. If I run Network Diagnostics on her system, checking all settings except
verbose, it fails in 2 places - first is in Network Adapters where it says
her Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card shows "Failed" because the
IPAddress of 192.168.10.2 shows failed. The second place it fails is almost
the reverse in that it is under IP Address where is shows that the Dell
Wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card shows "Failed".

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

I tried the netsh winsock reset and rebooting - to no effect. I will try the
other suggestion in the morning. Thanks.

Sorry, none of these suggestions worked. LSPFIX found no problems and NETSH
did not fix either.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

John here, support analyst at Dell headquarters. Since you've alread
rebuilt winsock, and since both NICs are malfunctioning simultaneously
the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to make sur
your hosts file is clean.

Go to C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and open hosts with notepad. Th
only entry that should be there under normal circumstances is:

127.0.0.1 localhost

If you see anything else below this, delete it. Any line starting wit
# is commented out, and doesn't affect anything.

Another thing to consider: your wireless router settings. Have yo
changed the encryption or the password recently?

John,

My hosts file is fine and the wireless router has not been changed either
with encryption or password. I have looked at other posts for similar
problems and the only thing that seems to work for people is to restore
Windows :(

I am going to look for her restore CD since I think it did not come with a
Windows CD. If I had one, I would try a repair install of Windows.

On a similar note, I tried using the hardwired port and I get the same
result. Pretty frustrating. She needs to have Internet access by next term
for school.

Maybe something here then.

Ouch...

If the same thing is happening through an ethernet connection, I would
have to agree it is probably a problem with the LSP stack. If you've
tried to reinstall Winsock and haven't had any results, reinstalling
Windows may be your best bet. If not, check the following article to
make sure you've gone through all the paces:

Hope this helps!
