Thanks to all for good data.

It is not the clearcut decision it appeared to be. I will still need to
look up differences between W98SE and ME.

Mike Sa

The only items to remember is that Dell may have only made drivers for
ME. You may install 98SE and find out that there are no drivers for 98SE
that will work with your motherboard from Dell.

This is always a consideration. I tried to run 98 on my old Compaq, and the
Winmodem could not be made to work in any fashion. Even though the
manufacturer had so called 95-98 drivers, I examined them and found they
were identical to the ME driver. I tried to use the ME driver, but the
thing just would not work in 98.

ANOTHER consideration based on my experience in switching a Presario Laptop
from ME to 98SE: They place the recovery info on a separate part and if you just
fdisk and format...and erase that part then your recovery disks will NOT work.
The (HP any) recovery disks have to access that part where they stored the info.
I did not know this BEFORE and proceeded to clean everything off the ME hd!
Oh yes, 98SE installed....BUT it took nearly an entire year to find THE only
driver that would work for the VIDEO and THE driver that would work for the audio.
Additionally, they had an integrated modem..... groan!!!! That took a long time to
get straightened out so I could get on the 'net' and dl from HP's site the ONLY
drivers
that would work! What a nightmare! SUGGESTION: BEFORE you delete ANYTHING
save your VIDEO, AUDIO and MODEM DRIVERS!

That was a surprise! Thanks to you, elaich and Helen for the info.

After reading the data at http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/winme.htm
I've decided to hopefully uninstall ME and install W98SE. Your comments
noted. IIRC, when my W98SE CD installs, it loads drivers, I believe.

Comment?

This may help- there is a Cert of Authority lable on the side of the case
for W98SE. So that must have been installed at one time, and someone took
it off and put ME on.

As mentioned before, the Win98 CD is very likely not to have drivers for
your hardware. I strongly suggest you identify your hardware using a
program like Belarc Advisor, and find and download the Win98 drivers before
you do this.

Thanks, elaich.

I did notice this- in every W3X and W9X screen I've ever seen, there is
always a way to access Windows Explorer in the Start menu somewhere but
not in this ME puter. In My Computer, I get to a "sort of" Explorer
display, but lots of graphics, have to page through several screens, etc.
and I don't get to the usual Explorer screen. I can probably go into a
Windows folder, find explorer.exe and create a shortcut to it, if it
exists in ME. Just a puzzle that ME didn't put a link somewhere in the
Start menu by default.

You CAN work in real DOS mode. You CAN uninstall Movie Maker and other
fluff. ME is so much faster and smarter than 98 that I would never run 98
again - but it's your choice.
Thanks, elaich.

You can get to it by Start>Programs>Accessories. I always just put a
shortcut on my quick launch bar.

I will have to create it, it's not there by default. There are enough good
remarks on ME in this thread and my thread on a W98 ng, that I will really
have to dig into ME to decide on it. I really like W98SE, never had the
problems I see posted on it.

In the other reply, rightclick what? Where is the cursor when you right click?

Well, since ME is already on the laptop, you have the luxury of using it.
Apply the tweaks suggested here and see how you like it. It's only
software.

It probably was there as default Mike , only takes a right click ,
hit delete & it's gone .
I keep mine on Quick Launch as well .

I'm with the guys , now you have ME installed , try it , they
certainly have given you the info to get it setup right &
running really well .

Hello John:
If you recall, this is Mike in the same state.....

You are the only one I'm aware of that uses ME, and likes it.

I just acquired a used Dell computer loaded with ME.

Two questions:
1. If I use a DOS 6.22 floppy to start a reformat, will ME likely give
me a "wrong version DOS" error message? I do get that with a W9X OS.

2. This is a Dell computer, I plan to reformat and then install W98SE.
Anybody with a recent Dell, the way Dell sets up the hard drive, can I
do this?

One other thing you should know Mike is that Windows 98 (to the best of
my knowledge) lacks the ability to view a folder of graphical images in
thumbnails view, which was added in ME. Also, there is no easy way to
view images by clicking on them (unless you add some kind of program).

BTW, I should have mentioned, this is a desktop, not laptop.
An update, I used My Drivers to identify the drivers. Nearly all the
drivers in ME are already in my W98SE install on my P166, just 3 drivers I
will backup. I will have to hunt up the proper Dell monitor driver, as the
generic one can't adjust refresh rate.

I ran 2XExplorer in ME but still prefer W98SE, so will have to reformat and
then install W98SE. I notice ME keeps only 2-5% RAM free, with only ME
installed. I uninstalled lots of stuff that was on it.

On my P166 with only 96 MB RAM, I usally have 20% free, and my P166 appears
quicker than the P700 running ME.

Thanks again for the help.

Since when were Win98 and ME freeware?
