Ping finds network place ?

I have two computers (one Win98 and one XP Pro) linked by a wireless
network.
My Network Places doesn't show the Win 98 computer unless I ping it.
Then it appears immediately.

What's going on and can I fix it so that I don't have to ping to find
the other computer ?

if you wait for 15 minutes, does the other computer then appear
on its own in My Network Places?

I can't wait for 15 minutes but it doesn't appear if I try a Find.

then I would recommend to use
http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm. The diagnosis should take
less than 5 minutes.
