Pinball & Can't access Add/Remove Windows Components

B

Betty

Hi all,
I've obviously done a bad thing! Everytime I try to
access add/remove Windows Components it won't open. I
get an error message in XP Set-up box that says "Unable
to open information file Pinball.inf Contact
administrator. Specific error code - 0x2 at line
2011777033 Application could not be initialized. A while
back I was "cleaning up" my system by uninstalling and
deleting files I didn't want/need/use etc. I have XP
Home along with a number of games all pre-installed. Any
suggestions (I still have pinball.exe on system but it
won't run just says wavemix.inf missing)on how to fix
my "cleanup" would be appreciated. I would like to have
Pinball back.
Thanks in advance,
Betty

Use System Restore to retreat to the day before you decided to clean up your
system, Betty. The Restore Points are listed by date, and you should be
able to undo everything you've done. If you aren't using System Restore,
you're pretty much up the creek because we have no idea what you've removed.
You may need to do a Repair install. Details to do that are here:

Thanks for the quick reply Chris.
I'll try the repair link and let you know how I make out.
Have a great day

Go get 'em, Betty. The instructions are very precise, and it does work very
well. I used it on one of my machines after a beta went bonkers.

Hi Chris,
Well I've decided that I really don't need Pinball! My
grandson will just have to play it at home. I did try
the Repair Install link and that's not an option with my
Original CD, I also found a site (all in German I think)
where I downloaded the Pinball.inf and Wavemix.inf files
that were missing to no avail. The only reason I didn't
use the Restore option is I don't want to re-do all the
fixes/upgrades/patches. Thanks for all the great
suggestions - I will definitley be more careful in the
future with my "cleanup".

Sorry Chris, I should have added I tried SFC /Scannow
(fixed 5 of 9)and even tried to re-install the "Value
Add" items from the original CD but always get the same
message "Cannot read the Pinball.inf file" same as when I
tried to open the Add/Remove Windows Components function
so I just decided it's not that important. Thanks

Hey Chris, what would I do without you? I am confused
about your adding the .inf file to post though so went in
and moved the one I had in the pinball folder to windows
folder and now I can see what's in the components!!!! I
think for my next trick I'll try re-installing the game
following your advice from another post unless I hear
otherwise from you.
Thanks for all your help and patience
Betty

I was sending you a "known good" version of the *.inf file, Betty, since it
works on my system. You had said your system couldn't find it, so I thought
perhaps it was either missing or corrupt.

You just don't have "pinball.inf" in your "%SYSTEMROOT%/inf" folder. You can either hand-craft a fake one or restore it from your Windows-CD. Read here how you can do that, if there's still a need.
