When I right click on my desk top shortcut applications, I see "pin to start
menu."

What does this mean?

Allllsssoooooo....What do the little arrows indicate on the desk top
application icons?

They mean the icon is a shortcut to the executable program file. One can
remove them.

That means the shortcut gets stuck in the upper left section of the
Start menu, so you'll see it every time you click "Start". That's
convenient if you use it a lot.

They mean that you're looking at a shortcut, not an executable. A
shortcut is a very small file that points to an executable. It also
points to an icon to be displayed, and contains a directory that will
be set as the current directory when the shortcut is used to start the
application.
