[Pimmy] Geminisoft Pimmy 3.4 beta 9

Angelo Donatiello

Hello,

This is the new Pimmy beta. We did some changes on filters management to
make them easier to use; for instance a new wizard helps creating new
filters.

As some of you know we already have released final italian version. This
english beta should be the last if no errors are discovered. Please take
one minute to install and test it.

Additional information and download instructions are available at our
international site: http://www.geminisoft.com/geminisoft.eng/

This beta converts configuration file and save a backup copy as
"Pimmy.cfg.44". We suggest you should keep this file so you would be able -
if necessary - to go back to beta 8. Address book file has not been
changed.

We are waiting for your suggestions and bug report as well as translation
mistakes. Thanks to everyone for supporting us.

--- New features

- Filters: filter creation has been simplified with a new wizard for most
common filters.
- Filters: standard filters creation has been improved explaining in a
window the meaning of each filter and allowing to select wich filters must
be created. In addition menu item has been moved from Tool menu to File
menu.
- Filters: a new standard filter is available, to automatically download
replies to own newsgroup messages.
- Filters: tree section with mailbox list also displays mailboxes and
newsgroups download options, so it is clearer what happens to messages not
affected by filters. Moreover mailboxes and newsgroups properties may be
displayed and changed directly from filters window, but only in the
download section. This way all operations on filtering and downloading may
be set from only one window.

--- Minor new features

- Filters: it is possible to check whether an address is available only in
the address book or signatures (in addition to both places).
- Filters: on mailboxes and newsgroups, the checkbox used to decide whether
to download unfiltered messages is checked by default for newsgroups too
(as for mailboxes). In addition the description is clearer.
- Filters: standard filters are created to mark discussions as old after 30
days instead of 10; moreover filters on blocked senders never become old.
- Filters: online help has been revised.
- Message list: to open message list window using default size and position
(instead of last one remembered by Pimmy), hold SHIFT key and open the
window. This may be useful when some items (preview pane or activity log
pane) are not visible.
- Message list: the commands used to add a message sender or recipient to
the address book are available on the right-click menu; in addition command
regarding filters have been re-positioned.
- Message: in replies after "<sender> wrote:" an empty line is
automatically added (starting with ">") before text.
- Online help: all windows have a menu to open help (same as pressing F1).
Some of the windows without menu have a special button to open help.

--- Corrections

- Options: character "encoding" value used in sent messages was not saved
to configuration file, so at each start Pimmy used "none" value.
- Message list: wrong position after deleting a group of messages.
- Message: keyboard locked after a right click on subject field, until
another click.
- Message: fixed font not used eventhough box on message list was properly
checked.
- Message: "references" fields could grow over 1000 characters (maximum
limit); now each reference is put on one row so the list is spanned over
many rows.
- Filters: sometimes Pimmy crashed deleting a filter.
- Filters: sometimes Pimmy hung-up (stopped responding) due to a mistake in
"regular expression" or "sentence with wildcards (* and ?)".
- Filters: in message list window it was possible to add a sender without
mail address to a filter.
- Newsgroup: the deletion of a provider did not delete newsgroup list file
(*.ngl).
- Newsgroup: authentication is now completed at the beginning of
communication to properly manage some servers that do not ask for it when
necessary.
- Newsgroup: details could not be shown if preview was disabled.
- Screen saver: it did not start on some Windows 2000/XP systems.
- Main window: menu item "Move mailbox..." has been renamed to "Move to..."
because it refers to newsgroups and folders too.
- Chat: online help could not be opened.

Second! It is my main mail client, too. It is so quick and handy. Can't
imagine doing emailing without it anymore.

In terms of newsreading, I am altering it with Xnews since Pimmy starts to
have filter support (I think Xnews is still the best reader for my need
currently).

Although Pimmy is not as powerful as Xnews (which has xFace support and is
designed to encourge good Usnet posting standard), the big plus about Pimmy
for me is that it can filter words within text and let me quickly catch up
with the "essential" posts while I am extremely busy. It also allow me to
make quick post without launching Xnews.

Although, a minus is that is does not have thread view support *yet*
(reading a heavy traffic group like this one is hard without a thread
view). When it starts to have thread support, I will certainly use it
more often for newsreading.

Just to say that we started developing thread support a few days ago. An
italian (and english?) beta should be available by the end of october
(Pimmy 3.5). For this reason we will speed up final 3.4 english release.

The References header needs to be under 1000 characters when UNFOLDED,
putting one per "line" doesn't solve the problem.

Well, it solves "one" problem. Some mailreaders and mail servers do not
support long lines, so references were truncated. Standard rules (I mean
RFCs) say to keep lines shorter than 1000 characters (and suggest 80 as
maximim limit).

I'm not sure that the 1000-char limit must be intended when lines are
joined together, but I will check this on the RFCs. Thanks.

Actually, you want to keep the line under 998 characters to avoid
problems with some older news servers.

Yes, because CR+LF are included in the 1000 characters. Actually we stay
lower, because we truncate text to 76 characters (+CRLF). We had this
problem on "references" fields but it was a bug. Now we put each reference
on a separate line so it should be no longer than the reference. Thanks for
giving more detail. Bye,
