physical memory dump corrupted bios

I recently tried to install Windows XP Pro on my Sony Vaio PCG-V505AX. After
installing the software, I went to the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site.
After downloading the security updates, windows tried to install these
patches, but halfway through the installation, I got a blue error message
stating that windows was going to perform a physical memory dump because of
some encountered error. I then rebooted the computer, but now when it turns
on, it gives me an error message, "Operating System not Found" and when I go
into the BIOS menu, under primary ide adapter, it lists none. I've tried to
reset the bios to default settings, but I haven't been successful in getting
it to detect my hardisk. I'm wondering if my motherboard is broken, and if
so, how did it break from just doing windowsupdate? If my bios is just
corrupt, is there a way to fix this withough having to send my computer back
to Sony?

Do you hear any beeps when you boot up? You might check the data and power
connections to the hard drive.
