PHP Text editor ?

John Fitzsimons

Yes, I know one could use just about any text editor. Ideally what I
would like however would be something with most/all of the following :

(1) Free.

(2) Able to open the system "default" browser (or an internal one)
without needing to "copy and paste" the file address.

(3) Able to run from a USB drive.

(4) Able to give an error if incorrect syntax used.

(5) Able to give an idea where an error may be.

(6) Able to suggest what an error may be.

(7) Able to run with an XP system.

It is probable that the above doesn't even exist BUT I thought
I might ask anyway. Just in case it does. :)

If anyone has used Stone's Webwriter, with Javascript, they will
know the sort of thing I mean.

Regards, John.

MetaPad covers 1 to 3 John, not sure on the rest of your wishes.

Here are some links that may help.

List of Portable Software
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_portable_applications#Editors_3
This is a list of software programs that are not required to be
"installed" onto a computer's permanent storage device to be executed,
and can be stored on a removable storage such as a USB flash drive and
used on multiple computers. Ideally it can be configured to read its
configuration from the same location as the software. This should not
be confused with software portability, which is the ability for
software to be run or compiled with little modification on diverse
computing platforms. Most software on this list can be run on multiple
computers of the same hardware and operating system platform only.
The distinction "portable" is mostly inapplicable for Apple Macintosh
software, as the standard packaging and installation method of the
Macintosh platform makes most applications already portable. However,
most Macintosh applications store their preferences on the computer
rather than the drive they are being run from; while it would be
possible to configure an application to behave differently, this is
uncommon. Portable Macintosh apps are also included in the below list
where available.

usb applications
http://www.kikizas.net/en/usbapps.html
This is a selection of freeware and OSS Windows programs that run from
USB keydrives with full functionality. The HAQ tries to answer
hypothetically asked questions. All programs listed work fine for us
from a USB keydrive. However, some things may depend on particular
configurations, while some information may not be accurate. Your
feedback is appreciated.
Please note that some freeware programs are free only for
home/personal/non-commercial use. For details, see licences. OSS
programs usually come with no restriction of usage.
