Photoshop pic to frontpage background

Hi-
I want to take my full page Photoshop .jpeg and make it my frontpage
background. How do I make it the smallest file possible, and when I set the
file as my background, why does it tile? I just want one full background
image, not one split between screens that goes on for 2 and a half pages.
Thanks- Sean

This is really not a good approach because you will have to optimize the
image so much ... for a decent file size ... that it will probably look
awful. But, is you must ... Look in the HELP files for how to not tile your
background image.

What would be a better approach? I would really like to have my background
imagery on every page. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Let's see what you have so far ... I'll be better able to answer your
question. How large is the Photoshop file ... dimensions and file size?

This was an ongoing problem with me.

That is, I sought advice from this NG and was told :
1) Keep the picture small (<40KB I think was recommended)
2) optimise..optimise..

It wasn't clear initially what I had to do to achieve this result. For
example what does "optimise" mean

Eventually I acquired the free IrfanView. This has an option to reduce
quality when saving a jpeg file. I kept reducing this until I got a small
enough file. What was a 1.14Mb file is now 17.6 Kb. I think this meets the
requirements and a 56kps modem should take <1 sec to load it

Have a go. Here is the website www.irfanview.com

BTW, to not tile use the style
background {repeat: norepeat}

Another BTW: Follow Eleanor's advice - she knows all about this topic.
