Photoshop equivalent freeware

No - there are some pretty good photo editors - Serif Photo Plus 5 (requires
free registration ) and GIMP are just 2 examples. But there is no editor
with the exact duplicate/equivalent set of features as Photoshop.

Personally, I think PhotoPlus is a great editor.

but it's like neraly 11mb in download size. Babya photo workshop does
more-it can create slideshows in the soon to be released v 2 and it has a 6
item clipboard, plus it is easier to use:
Babya Photoworkshop is fully featured-yet under 2mb with vb runtimes and has
many image effects:

So, you're basically saying that you have a better quality,
feature-richer program than the GIMP, and it's only 20% in size.
And you've developed it with a small team instead of a whole open
source community, who has been contributing to GIMP for years.

Well, that is just hard to believe.

To the OP: try the GIMP.

Though I haven't tried "photo workshop" yet (as I intend to do), it
certainly is possible for one or two programmers to come up with a
smaller, more elegant and richer program than what is produced by an
unwieldy conglomeration of volunteers. There is an old adage that you
don't get better software faster by throwing more programmers at it.
Nor is size necessarily an indication of functionality.

On the other hand, I have tried to like Gimp over the years, and it
reminds me of nothing so much as a program tortured together by a
committee. In no way does it compare to Photoshop for accomplishing
any real-life, day-to-day work, and I hardly think the people at Adobe
are quaking in their boots. The Gimp is certainly interesting, and the
OP should probably try it, but as an artistic tool it is nearly
unusable for me and other graphic artists I know who've tried it.

Rather than trying for an exact replacement for Photoshop, or whatever
other commercial software, it would be better (IMO) to look for the
features you value most and find a freeware that does that thing well
- it might end up being Pixia, Photo workshop, or even the Gimp. After
all, there are things that even Photoshop doesn't do as well as
others.

I second that!

It's the only one that has most of the important feathers of PS, also the
"feel".

Well said.

I've tried to like The Gimp as well, with no joy. This may sound trivial,
but I find the GUI has a rough look and feel which I simply can't warm up
to. It feels like I'm using a right-handed mouse with my left hand.

That said, there's no dishonor in borrowing features from the industry
standard. :)

General Nuisance

A long while back, PSP415se.zip (special freeware edition) was offered, and
is
hard to find now. I located it at
ftp://ftp.uv.es/pub/windows/win95/oldstuff/psp415se.zip
if you work fast before there get ride of it once and for all. This freeware
version does
not support .GIF files.
