Is there a freeware alternative to Photoshop Elements?

The GIMP is a freeware alternative to Photoshop.

If the GIMP is more complex than you like, you can try:

Pixia:

Photoplus 6 (registerware, send them a throwaway email address):
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/PhotoPlus/default.asp

Pictbear SE:
http://sleipnir.pos.to/software/pbse/index.html

The last one is on a Japanese site, but don't worry, the installation
program offers an English option and the software itself will let you
choose an English interface. It's a moderately-featured program, quite
nice, but has one big downside -- no instructions or help docs of any
sort. You'll have to figure it out on your own. Or learn Japanese.

Hi Richk;

I don't know about Photoshop Elements.

If you're looking for very simple photo-editing (resizing, red-eye, etc)
Picasa2 will do it. It's perfect for those who don't want to RTFM.

If you're looking for a free (open-source,) full-featured photo-editing
s/w app, Gimp is *the* standard. Gimp was _moderately_ difficult for me
to learn because:
- the interface is not MS Windows-like (but I got over it)
- there were times when I needed to RTFM (got over that too)

The upside is that it's a GREAT program. Very good documentation, very
active community (newsgroup, etc).

Ah;

Well, if it's hidden, no one knows about it. If it *was* hidden, then
it's documented somewhere...by someone. It *does* call home (ostensibly
for updates) but you can turn off that feature.

Sorry I can't be of more help on that issue but you might consider open
source products (eg gimp) a better solution for you in this case since
the source code is open to scrutiny.

Hmmm. Nobody's mentioned PhotoFiltre yet.
A while back, people here were all abuzz about it. I haven't had a need
for it since it's been out, so I just took a quick look at the time --
it seemed pretty powerful.

I've used Photoshop -- it's a super-capable professional tool with a
super price, too. But we know all that, of course. So, how do these
various free programs do as giant killers?

It creates picasa.ini files with the hidden file attribute in directories
you access with Picasa. Picasa is owned by Google who are pretty privacy
friendly.
