Photography with Flatbed Scanner...

Maris V. Lidaka Sr.

I think scanning objects is a legitimate art form. Personally, I would not
call it "photography", as it does not employ the use of a camera (be it film
or digital) which is portable - paractially speaking, a scanner is not
portable, but then it could be a matter of semantics, depending to a great
extent on the context in which it is denominated as "photography".

As to the substance of your art form, there is an excellent book by Janet
Ashford and John Odam called "Start with a Scan - A Guide to Transforming
Scanned Photos and Objects into High Quality Art". I recommend it.

Hello,

for a while I asked if some of my scanned images where photographs. I
got good feedback here.

Here I described how I take photographs with a flat bedscanner:

Photography means drawing with light. Scanning images and printing
them is, technically, drawing with light, ergo, it's a photo. Pinhole
cameras don't employ conventional photographic techniques involving
shutters and mirrors and 'f' stops etc, but we still regard them as
photographs.

I think your images are stunning and look just like photographs taken
with a camera but better! I have tried this technique myself with
stunning results. I have also used a sheet of Perspex above the object
and used varying backgrounds above that, such as wallpaper and pages
from a dictionary. The possibilities are endless. You have to keep
all the surfaces clean tho'.

Vinc. I've been thinking of getting a Canoscan 4200F. Is this a good
scanner?

I think you should have a gallery on your site just for the pictures
you capture using your scanner. Would be interesting to compare to
regular photos.

I am completely happy with it, however to make "photographs" you are
going to need VUESCAN in paralell.

This does not mean that the Canon Software is not ok, it does a great
job on documents.

Maybe I will do that some day, for the moment I just have added forum
which I want to bring to live next weeks.
