I'm still having trouble w/a photogallery at
www.holtswcd.org/whatsnew

The file path in the center of the page is the location
where the gallery pics reside, but they just don't
display. Can anyone help?

Also, the interactive buttons don't display? Any ideas
on how to fix that?

Thanks!

First:

Remove all spaces (which will appear as 20%) from your Folder Names, File Names, Image File Names.

Second/Third/Forth...:-)
Then make sure you are working with an Open Web not individual pages when you design your gallery - or for that matter when y ou do anything in FP.

IMPORT your images from a folder outside of FP, INTO your Image Folder INSIDE FP.

Create your gallery using the images you IMPORTED into FP's Image Folder.

Save.

Recalculate Hyperlinks (in this instance)

RE-PUBLISH to your online server.

Still no luck. Can we start from the beginning?

Here is how I created the page in question
(www.holtswcd.org/whatsnew

Opened FP
File, Open Site
Found my site name (www.holtswcd.org) and clicked 'open'
This opens the remote site. When I save changes, they
automatically update/publish. Is this correct so far?

When inserting photos, I only insert from w/i the folders
in my site. (I have optimized the photos OUTSIDE of FP,
then imported the photos to a folder in the remote site).
Is this correct so far?

Thanks

No.
Don't do it live on the server.

On your local machine:
Open FP
Open local copy of website
Import Images from outside FP, into folder IN FP (usually your Images folder)

On the page that is to contain the Gallery:
Insert Gallery
In the gallery setup insert your images from the folder WITHIN FP
Save Page
Recalculate Hyperlinks (this is only because you've been messin')

Now...
File/Publish (or whatever FP 2003 calls it..) this will send your newly created gallery to the online server.

ps...you might want to delete you existing and non-working gallery(s) before you do this.
-its not necessary but if you're easily confusted as I am...I like to get rid of non-working crapola first.

Ok - no problem doing it from a local copy.

Now, I'm not sure how to 'recalculate hyperlinks'. I
can't find that option. Please advise.

Also, when trying to save after I have imported the
images and inserted interactive buttons, I receive this
message: Because this page has a URL set, you will need
to save any new or changed pictures to the base website
as a separate step.

I don't understand how to save the 'pictures' as a
separate step. Please advise.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Sorry you lost me at "inserted interactive buttons...and the error message given. I'm not currently running 2003 (its still in the box on my desk).

Did you import the images into the Image folder in FP first?

In addition to a photo gallery on this page of my site, I
was also trying to use a text/hyperlinked button. It is
one of the pre-formed web components available. From
what I have read, when inserted into the page, it is
supposed to automatically create multiple images in a
folder on your site for the original, hovered and pressed
forms of the button. I've used them before
(www.holtswcd.org) and did not receive this message...

As for the photo gallery (the original problem), I notice
that when I attempted to save the page again after
inserting the gallery, it did NOT create a new
photogallery number with the associated real.htm (etc.)
files. Also, in PF, with my site open (local), when I
select the 'reports' tab, I see that the page has an
outstanding error that says:
A FrontPage Include component references
URL "file:///C:/Documents and Settings/regina.young/Local
Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/FrontPageTempDir/wp5d3lg3.htm", but the file for
this URL cannot be found

Thanks for your Help!

Ok. I started over - completely from ground zero.

I deleted all the pics from both the local and remote
site files. I deleted all temp files. I then imported
all the photos I wanted to use on the gallery into a
folder w/i FP. I then created a NEW page with everything
except the graphics and saved it. I then inserted a new
gallery w/the fresh photos. I recalculated hyperlinks.
I then published it.

It still doesn't show the photogallery once published.

I'm open to next step suggestions.

Thanks!

Nope, you're still not doing something correct..it's still referencing the gallery to your harddrive on local machine.

Start Over.

Work on your Local Machine, create the gallery there.
Then Publish it to the online server.

I started over. Created an entirely new page from scratch
and it still shows the file path back to my local hard
drive. I want to list the steps I took so that perhaps
you can determine what I am doing wrong and why it still
refers the gallery back to my local machine:

-Deleted the site page from local & remote files
-Deleted the gallery photos from local & remote files
-Deleted the photogallery files that FP created from
local & remote files
-Deleted all temp files/cookies created on my local
machine
-Closed FP and ran a repair.
-I then opened FP.
-Opened site (local not on the server)which is named
holtswcd
-Go to the 'photos' folder
-Clicked File, Import
On the 'Import' window, I clicked Add File
From the 'Add File to Import List' window, I
selected the 14 photos (already optimized) that I have
saved on my local drive - clicked open
The photos then appear on the 'Import' window
From there I click ok
- The photos are now in the 'photos' folder w/i FP
-I opened a new FP page.
-Put the text info on the page and did file/save as to
save a local copy
-Clicked insert, web component, photogallery
-From the 'photogallery properties' window, I clicked
add-pictures from files
-From the photos folder in holtswcd (local), I select the
14 pictures and click open. The photos are copied to
the photogallery where I add the text descriptions and
click ok.
The photogallery now appears correctly on the page.
I click save.
I then publish to the remote server (www.holtswcd.org)
Everything except the photogallery appears correctly.
In its place is the path that includes the newly created
photogallery number, but it refers to my local machine.

What do you think might be the problem?

Thanks, Regina
-----Original Message-----
Nope, you're still not doing something correct..it's
still referencing the gallery to your harddrive on local
machine.
Start Over.

Work on your Local Machine, create the gallery there.
Then Publish it to the online server.

That all looks like the correct procedure.
You might want to try recalculating hyperlinks.

BUT:
1- The page is totally missing now (whatsnew.html)
2- You're running on Apache with FPSE...so:
3- CHECK ALL your page names/file names/image file names/folder and remove spaces (20%) and any other illegal characters.

I noticed other images on on other pages have the same path problem. Make sure you're working with the Web Open and not just a page.

I did recalculate hyperlinks before, I just forgot to
list it.

Yes, the page is missing, now - I took it down on purpose
because it needed more info to be presentable.

I know this probably sounds really stupid, but I'm not
sure how to remove spaces, etc. from the file names -
where do I go to do that?

If I go to File, Open Site - this would be working from
an open web page, right? That's what I have been doing,
so why would the path show that way?

I'm so lost....
-----Original Message-----
That all looks like the correct procedure.
You might want to try recalculating hyperlinks.

BUT:
1- The page is totally missing now (whatsnew.html)
2- You're running on Apache with FPSE...so:
3- CHECK ALL your page names/file names/image file
names/folder and remove spaces (20%) and any other
illegal characters.
I noticed other images on on other pages have the same
path problem. Make sure you're working with the Web Open
and not just a page.

I'm still using FP2002 so this may not match your version but the procedure will be similar;

Open FP
Open Web (the local one)
In File View (might be called something else in 03- but its the view where you see the files/folders on the left)
Right Click on Folder or File
Rename
You'll be prompted about hyperlinks...thats ok.

You can use underscores_ in file names instead of spaces (not in first position though unless you want it to be a hidden folder). You may want to use all lowercase alpha as well.

Recalculate hyperlinks (for good measure).

Republish.

Then be aware that you may end up with files on the server that still have the old filenames with spaces...you should check that later and delete them if they are still there. This you can do "live" if you want. Do it after you've sure you've converted all.

hang in there kid :-)

Thank you for staying with me.....So the instructions you
outlined in your last response are so that I can rename
file names to eliminate spaces & illegal characters?
(Which by the way, do NOT show w/i the file or folder
names on my machine).

I'm still a little confused. If I open FP, open the
local web, I do have a little folder icon from which I
can create a new folder. I do have the option of
renaming it. From this point, I'm not sure what I am
supposed to do. Have I created a new folder to name (for
example) whatsnewphotos so that I can import my photos
into this folder?

As for the prompt regarding the hyperlinks, I didn't get
it. What was it supposed to have me do or warn me about?

Thanks for your patience......

I'm still using FP2002 so this may not match your
version but the procedure will be similar;
Open FP
Open Web (the local one)
In File View (might be called something else in 03- but
its the view where you see the files/folders on the left)
Right Click on Folder or File
Rename
You'll be prompted about hyperlinks...thats ok.

You can use underscores_ in file names instead of spaces
(not in first position though unless you want it to be a
hidden folder). You may want to use all lowercase alpha
as well.
Recalculate hyperlinks (for good measure).

Republish.

Then be aware that you may end up with files on the
server that still have the old filenames with
spaces...you should check that later and delete them if
they are still there. This you can do "live" if you want.
Do it after you've sure you've converted all.
hang in there kid :-)

Office Staff page & Conservation Links both reference file folders with spaces on your c: drive and on the S: drive...probably your network. This is generally a result of not importing the images into your local FP web (on your machine).

Yes you should create a folder (or use the default image folder) in FP on your machine to bring all photos/image files you plan to use in your web design, then draw on them from there to create your design - this is the safest way.

In other words if you already have a folder called Images, just put them in that. Personally I create subfolders within Image folder to keep my brain straight but it's not vital to do so.

It' might not always happen, don't worry about it.

I'm a saint...what can I tellya. :-)

FINALLY!! WE DID IT - IT WORKED!! I now have a
photogallery!! (see www.holtswcd.org/whatsnew.html)

Now, let me tell you what I did....I opened the remote
site, imported the images into the remote site (bypassed
the local all together) and it worked!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for helping me for so
long with this one! I REALLY appreciate it!!

|

Office Staff page & Conservation Links both reference
file folders with spaces on your c: drive and on the S:
drive...probably your network. This is generally a result
of not importing the images into your local FP web (on
your machine).
Yes you should create a folder (or use the default image
folder) in FP on your machine to bring all photos/image
files you plan to use in your web design, then draw on
them from there to create your design - this is the
safest way.
In other words if you already have a folder called
Images, just put them in that. Personally I create
subfolders within Image folder to keep my brain straight
but it's not vital to do so.

Hey cool!
I almost didn't scroll all the way down here...glad I did.

I don't like working on my sites live unless there's something that will get messed up by publishing.

You know what you should do now? You should Publish the working online web to your machine...only do it to a new web not your normal copy. That way you should have a local working copy of it.

Good luck!

Hey cool!
I almost didn't scroll all the way down here...glad I did.

I don't like working on my sites live unless there's
something that will get messed up by publishing.
You know what you should do now? You should Publish the
working online web to your machine...only do it to a new
web not your normal copy. That way you should have a
local working copy of it.
Good luck!

|
|

| >Yes you should create a folder (or use the default image
