Photo "stitching"

I think "stitching" is one of the terms used for the procedure I have in
mind.).

I have two photos at hand. One contains person A and person B. The other
contains person C and person D.

I am trying to make a separate new photo containing person A and person C,
that is, one from each of the two origiinal photos.

Using a program called PhotoStudio I have managed to get the two persons
into a single photo by using two separate layers and "stitching" them
together.

But the original ones had differenet backgrounds.

Can someone tell me how to change the mixed backgrounds into a suitable one.?

Thanks.

==================================
I would suggest that you need to make
"cutouts" of the subjects (think paperdolls)
and layer the cutouts on an acceptable
background.

Here are links to before and after
examples of what I'm referring to:

Original (B)

I use the MS Picture It! / MS Digital Image
Pro image editing programs...but any
program with a cutout tool would work.
