photo quality

i am starting my first website (yes, a noob) and i am using a template. i have added some photographs, first using paint to cut out a section from a larger photograph. when inserted into the site, the pictures are very grainy and the quality isn't near the original photograph. i have tried looking into editing with no luck. any ideas?

Your best luck is to paste the picture into a graphics editor first. FP just
doesn't have the graphics algorithms to be helpful when you do a paste. FP
also defaults to 75% quality when pasting for some reason. If you paste it
into another graphics program first and save it, then you can use the FP
File | Import feature to import the image into your web and then add it to
your page.

don't use Paint, use Photoshop or Ulead or any good image editor.
avoid cut & paste when you can, some image formats degrade when cut/paste.
avoid editing jpgs over and over again....everytime you save jpgs they degrade.

best to use Photoshop, save the jpg as a psd or tiff while working on it...then save it only once to jpg (keep the tiff or psd incase you want to work on it again) never keep working on jpgs or you will have mush when your done.

Photoshop Elements will do just fine ... not the full version of Photoshop!
another great program for photos is Paint Shop[ Pro.

Use an image editor to cut / crop your images.
The free IrfanView will do what you want, and it will change the format for
you too.

thanks for all the help and fast response. i have a feeling i have an uphill battle putting a simple website together, if i am already having trouble with just adding pictures. maybe i'll have a site in a year or 2. i'll check out these photo editing pg's you have recommended.
