Follow-up: BillW, do not know if I have a voice modem. Will try to find out
since that may be the problem. Ken, I do have a dial-up modem. It works to
place a call and I can hear the answering party over the computer speakers,
but they cannot hear me. The mike works in other programs.
That is perfectly normal to hear the voice (dialtone, etc) over the
computer speakers. Although that doesn't mean it is a voice modem. But
it is a better sign than the modem itself just making noises. As that
would be an almost automatic bad sign that it wasn't a voice modem.

Oh I don't know any laptops that have voice modems. It's not impossible,
just very less likely. They do sell external (both RS2332 and USB) voice
modems though that should work just fine.
