Phone cord and my laptop

When I leave my phone cord plugged into my laptop, (we have dialup) it
doesn't let anyone else connect to the internet, and the phone line is dead.
When I unplug the telephone cord from my laptop it seems to work just fine.
But when I go to connect again it won't work if th cord is plugged in, so I
unplug the cord, and plug it back in, and it works again. I have deleted my
internet account on my laptop and made a new one and I am still having this
problem. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Jessica,

Sounds to me like your modem is not releasing the phone line when you disconnect
from your connection.

Since you don't provide any hardware and / or operating system details, I can't
look up the possibility of a driver upgrade for the modem, but I'd try that
next.

You might want to take this conversation to comp.dcom.modems. This question
comes up pretty regularly there, and one of the modem experts should be able to
sort you fairly quickly.

Cheers,
Chuck
