Phanton sending of e-mails in Outlook 2007

I hope someone can help me with this one...

I've recently upgraded to Office 2007 and Outlook is doing something
which is freaking me out / worrying me.

Last night, I was sending an e-mail and the send / receive progress
showed that it was sending 1 of 3 e-mails. I checked the Outbox, and
it only showed the 1 e-mail...the one I wanted to send. When it was
completed, my Sent items only showed the 1 e-mail...again, the one I
wanted to send.

I've got McAfee installed which is fully up-to-date, and is set to
scan incoming & outgoing e-mails. It is showing nothing untoward, but
still this has happened. With McAfee running, I'm hoping that I'm not
infected with anything, but I don't know where to start looking.

Can anyone help me?

Many thanks

First, disable all email scanning, it absolutely is NOT needed and may be
the source of your problems.

Second, you may have some stuck read receipts:

Delete Read Receipts using OutlookSpy

Delete a stuck Read Receipt

Third, how many email accounts do you have defined?

There appears to be an issue with Outlook 2007 wherein the number of
accounts you have affects the number of outgoing messages that are reported.
You will see a report that "a-1" extra messages are being sent, where "a" is
the number of accounts you have defined. Thus, if you have, say four
accounts defined and two messages are in the Outbox, Outlook will report
five (2 real messages plus 3 extra accounts beyond the first one) messages
being sent. I believe this is a cosmetic issue and not a report of the
number of messages Outlook is actually trying to send.

I come to these conclusions based on multiple reports in these newsgroups.

Well, I followed the steps outlined by Hal, and there were two stuck
read receipts. Now deleted, so hopefully everything will be OK.
Also, to answer your question, I have two e-mail accounts that I check
in Outlook.

However, on reading Brian's response, I'm hoping that this "cosmetic"
issue does not hang aroound for too long.

Many thanks
