Phantom Recovery Console in Windows Boot Manager

Hi,

I recently installed Vista atop an old Windows XP installation (not an
upgrade).

As expected, Windows created the windows.old directory with all my old
files. I recovered them and then used disk cleanup to remove the old windows
install. All is working well.

The only issue that remains is that I now have a phantom Windows XP Recovery
Console entry in the Windows Boot Manager.

I know that Windows Boot Manager will pick up entries from the old boot.ini
file, but that file is no longer present. I am familiar with bcdedit but it
lists no such entry. I even tried the third-party vistabootpro utility just
to make sure I wasn't missing something...and there is no entry for the
recovery console.

My question is, how do I get rod of this entry--where is it coming from?

It appear at every start,

I get the Windows Boot Manager, just as if I were dual booting, though I am
not.

There is only the single entry in the boot tab under msconfig

Yes, I did-it found nothing "wrong"

As I understand it, startup repair replaces files that are missing or
damaged--in my case, The files are all there and functioning as best I an
tell--I just have this one extra setting it is picking up from somewhere.
If I had a boot.ini file, I would understand what was going on, but Vista
must have deleted it during install--or moved it into the window.old
folder...not sure.

Windows install left some leftover files from the XP days--some old .bak
files, but cleared the boot.ini I assumed at the time because it is no
longer used

But I will be damned if I can figure out where it is getting the xp recovery
console setting. I'm sure it is just left over in the bcd store--but I
cannot edit it out using any conventional means

GOD I AM OFFICIALLY A MORON!

Though I had thought I had set hidden and system files and folders to
visible under FOLDER OPTIONS, I had not. I was staring at my desktop and
realized I ought to see the desktop.ini file if I had.

I went back in and double checked, changed it to show system files and
folders and it revealed boot.ini--and in boot.ini was the elusive setting to
a dead recovery console!

So, even though I did an advanced search on boot.ini asking it to look at
hidden system and non-indexed files, search did not find it.

Furthermore, bcdedit apparantly does not reveal legacy settings from the
boot.ini file

Anyway, I commentedout the offending setting and Vista now boots without
stopping at the boot manager....case solved....boy, do I feel stupid.
