Phantom Password

I have a Compaq notebook with XP Home Edition. Out of
nowhere (have had it for 14 months) it started asking me
for a password on the windows login screen when I click
my user name. I've never used a password. Compaq has
tried everything, but nothing has worked and they told me
to do a full restore, but I'll lose all my data. Any
ideas?
