Phantom files in Windows Explorer

A recent download crashed part way & left me with file & directory framents.
I eliminated most through cmd.exe used in the Safe Mode. However, there are
3 remaining directories that are listed in Windows Explorer that do not show
up when using Cmd.exe (even in Safe Mode). When I try to delete them in
Windows Explorer I get the ususal "access denied" messages. And since they
do not list when I run cmd.exe, I can't delete them through that route.
Anyone ever run into this and been able to solve?

(The computer where this happened is running XP Home Edition SP 2 w/ all
updates and the drive is NTFS.)
