PFN_LIST CORRUPT and the BSOD

I have not used my floppy disk drive on this Dell 4600 PC running Windows XP
Home for ages. Today when I tried to use it, the computer crashed with
"PFN_LIST CORRUPT as the BSOD message. I have run a memory test and it is
fine. Any clues?

Have you tried more than one floppy disk?

Can you please post the full Stop Error message?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

Yes, I have now tried 3 different disks and the same thing happens. I could
not get the Event Viewer to show me the BSOD message, nothing tied in with
the system stop time, but the BSOD begins with the PFN_LIST CORRUPT error
message and the usual guff about whether I have installed new software or
hardware. I have not.

The stop message though is: STOP: 0X0000004E (0X00000007, 0X00000D75,
0X00000001, 0X00000000)

The link you have posted on the event viewer does not work - it says the URL
is not recognised.

There are no yellow question marks in Device Manager.
