Personal firewall recommendation wanted

goshengoogle

I would appreciate a firewall recommendation. I currently have McAfee
Security Suite but am very disappointed in the company's lack of
technical support.

Here are my specs for the product I desire:

- Windows XP Home Edition, SP 2
- Dial-up line (there is as yet no DSL in my area)
- Want to monitor / block incoming and outgoing
- Rated high in terms of being able to block most intrusion attempts
("leaks")
- Backed by a company that offers good technical support, preferably
by email
- Minimal configuration required; product should work well "out of the
box"

I suspect that some folks will feel that I am trying to get a free
lunch. That is, looking for a quality product that does not require me
to do much in the way of configuration. But after perusing various
groups and seeing the troubles that some folks have with their
personal firewalls, I do not want to find myself in that same
position.

Thank you in advance for your help.

You might try TrendMicro - I like their stuff.

Adding to Lanwench, you can get Panda software or you can go for the free
Avast Anti-virus and AVG Free and get a free Firewall like ZoneAlarm or Keiro
and you are safe from the open net and you can configure them as you like.
HTH.

Dear GoshenGoogle,
I highly reccomend Comodo Personal Firewall. I have used many of the other
well known brands, and find there are often compatibility issues or support
issues, or both. Comodo's firewall is free. They also have an antivirus
product in beta, which is also free. I am using Panda Antivirus for right
now (and OF COURSE Ad Adware SE Plus! with Ad Watch). I have used Panda for
many years and it works extremely well. I have had a number of problems with
the 2007 version of their internet security product though as Windows would
frequently report it was turned off, which it wasn't. Tech support was
unable to resolve the problem for me. Their antivirus tool is excellent.
Once the Comodo antivirus is commercial grade, I will try it however because
their company is a high contact company. And their firewall really does it's
job. Their support is by way of their forums, and the community is very
responsive, and frankly, has a great vibe. The participants are very
enthusiastic and highly technical. The CEO also responds to posts!
Hope this helps!

The problem with questions like this is that you usually get several answers
and each person tells you his favorite product. So, you end up with
conflicting recommendations and no better off than when you started.

I personally like the free ZoneAlarm. But rather your choosing my
preference, or anyone else's, what I recommend you do is try several of them
(one at a time). At least try the free ones like ZoneAlrm, and any others
that are shareware. Then you can have your own basis of comaprison, and
choose which one meets *your* needs the best.
