personal file size does not match reported file size

I have a .pst file that windows reports as 170meg. but when i open it in
Outlook it is show only aproximate total size of 120kb My user is not sure
how this happened or what exactly was clicked before this occurred.
 
A pst-file is a database. The size of the pst-file (as reported in Windows
Explorer) is always bigger than the combined size of all the items within it
(as reported in Outlook) because of white space and overhead.

However in your case the difference is quite big. Either your user has
recently deleted a lot of items from within the pst-file or is looking at
the wrong pst-file.
