Permission on C:\ProgramData

Hi

My lap top (Windows Vista Home Premium) came with Norton Antivirus
installed. When it expired its trail period, I decide install the Symantec
Antivirus Enterprise (my company has an agreement in which I can instal this
version in my home computer). The unisntall of Norton was OK. However, when I
tried to install the new one (Symantec Antivirus) I am receiving the
following message:

The file 'C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Antivirus
Corporate Edition\7.5\vd213413.xdb' could not be opened. Please check that
your disk is noit full and that you have access to the destination directory.
The system cannot find the path s

I tried several changes. I could change the owner of C:\ProgramData (it was
System and now it is my user) but I can't change the permission of this
directory.

I have inly 1 user and this is an admininstrator.

What shall I do ?

Don't use Norton. Virtually no one approves of its use.

Not only is it a resource hog, but it conflicts with installations and other
system functions. Further, it is damn hard to remove.

Is the version of SAV that you're attempting to install one which is
explicitly documented as being compatible with Vista? V11.x is supposed to
be compatible as is 10.2.0.276; while I can't vouch for the idea that no
other version is Vista-compatible I wouldn't assume that any other flavor is
safe.

Your company IT staff should be able to tell you if what they've made
available is expected to work with Vista; if not, they might be interested
in using your systems as a testbed to try out the correct SAV package in a
Vista environment.

Yes, I did. I think the Norton uninstall was OK. My problem is with the
Symantec installation. When I try to install it I get a message informing
that it is required permission ot write in 'C:\ProgramData\Application Data.
My user is administrator and I already tried right click in the mouse and
choose the option "run as administrator". Nothing works.

I suggest right-click on Symantec folder, Properties, Security--take
Ownership, then click out of properties back to the folder. Then right-click
Symantec again, Properties, Security and then grant yourself Full Control.
Make sure when you take Full Control that this Apply To "This folder,
subfolders, and files". If you're still not able to grant yourself Full
Control, click on Advanced and make sure your permissions are "not
inherited". If they are inherited, uncheck "include inheritable permissions
from this object's parent". You may have to Add your Username back to the
list.

If you're still having problems opening the .exe file, click on Start, type
in Start Search box "Windows Explorer", right-click on Windows Explorer, then
Run as Administrator. Then navigate to the .exe file and open it.

I meant to add that Vista Uninstaller is ineffective and sometimes even with
Norton Removal Tool, remnants of Symantec remain on your computer and prevent
any AV reinstall or new install. You can get rid of these blocking remnants
by using Smarty Uninstaller available at this link:
