Periodic PCL XL Error when printing to LPT1 printer

Periodically when printing documents (from Office XP or Lotus Notes) to my HP
Laserjet 2100 printer I get the following:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNAL
Error: IllegalTag
Operator: 0x1
Position: 868 <---(this varies).

If I just re-print the print or send to another printer this problem does
not occur. I have tried different Printers and cables to no avail. This
problem is non-reproducible and is very sporatic. I have tried different
settings within the Printer setting ans still have the same problem.

The printer is configured as HP LaserJet 2100 Series PCL 6 driver (and have
tried most of the others withthe same problem).

Any Idea's?

This sounds like a firmware related problem in the printer. You may be able
to change driver versions or change the printer emulation mode (IE anything
but PCL XL) The printer & driver may have postscript emulation, a different
version of PCL, or even RAW as possible modes.

I have also observed this type of intermittent problem when the printer
connections to the PC was not the best. In this case assuming the printer
uses a parallel port connection, you might try using the BIOS SPP mode
setting instead of the default ECP mode.
