periodic jumping of media and mouse pointer

Often when I open a media file (I think this is when this
starts), my computer will freeze or pause periodically, at
intervals of about 1.5 seconds or so, for about a half
second, continuously until I restart the machine. What I
mean by freeze is that the media will jump in place for
the half second and my mouse pointer will be frozen. I
assume that other processes freeze as well though there is
no way for me to really know. The problem has become very
frustrating and I was wondering if anyone has had this
problem and what they may have found as the cause.

Thanks,
Chuck

Hi, Chuck. Without knowing your computer specs, it isn't possible to
say. What is your processor speed, amount of RAM, and what video card
do you use? Perhaps your machine is underpowered for what you are
trying to do. Or perhaps you have 47 programs/processes running in the
background that are taking cpu cycles that are needed to run the media.
Repost with details for help.

Well I've got 256Mb of RAM, a 1.2 Ghz Athlon processor,
and a few bare hardware essentials such as a creative live
soundcard and a video card which I don't recall the specs
on at the moment, but it's a geforce that I know can
handle what I've got. I am often fighting with background
processes running but I have definitley tried stopping
almost all of them with the problem persisting until a
restart. Also, this isn't a problem that starts when just
running video, it also happens when I just open an audio
file with either Winamp or WMP. It even occurs after a
format and installation of either WinXP or 2000 with just
the bare essentials running, before I am connected to a
network or the internet and with no downloaded software
installed (thus eliminating the possibility of viruses,
trojans and adware).
Thanks for any further insights.

If you get the problem after a format/install of either Windows 2000 or
Windows XP, I would think that you have a hardware problem. It could also be
the drivers associated with your installed hardware. Get the latest from the
manufacturer. Do not use the drivers seen in Windows Update.

And, you "have" applied all the Window Updates - right?
